How to maintain and charge your laptop battery

Laptops are becoming popular as technology expands into
the future, and it seems that most households have at  LEAST    one laptop these days.  ( Please try your hardest to forgive me if you have no laptop at all! )

Laptops are extremely convenient and handy,  BUT -  due to the proprietary parts that are used, and the relatively high cost of replacement parts, care must be taken in operating and maintaining these kind of  computers.

One overlooked  laptop accessory that can equal the difference between your computer working and your computer NOT working is: the BATTERY !  I recently experienced laptop battery failure, only 6 months after purchasing my shiny new HP laptop.  Can you believe that my battery died in only SIX months while still under warranty?  Exactly…..I can’t believe it either !!

If I had known then what I know now, I would have avoided the frustration of waiting nearly two months from the time I shipped my old (dead) battery to HP; to actually receive the new item !  Luckily, my computer was still under the factory warranty, or I would have spent a whopping 9.00 on a new battery!  VERY BAD .

If your laptop is used for business, work or school; I am sure you cannot afford to go without your computer for suchs long periods of time, as I did.  The old adage an ounce of prevention is  worth a pound of cure,  holds as true as ever –  so lets explore a few tips to prevent your laptop battery from dying prematurely:

—————————–

1.)  When at home or near a power outlet, plug in your laptop and REMOVE your battery!

Many people (including myself until last year), have the habit of plugging their laptop into the wall, and keeping the battery attached to the laptop.  A laptop battery is rechargeable, and rechargeable batteries have a limit to the amount of times or hours, that they can be charged.  When your battery remains in your laptop while it is plugged in, it continues to charge and thus the life of the battery is lowered significantly.  Since your laptop will work with the power supply attached, without the battery;  this method is the best way to extend the life of your laptops battery.

————-

2.)  Before you charge your laptop battery, make sure the battery is VERY LOW!

Rechargeable batteries have cell memory, which basically means that your laptops battery remembers how much power it had prior to the last charge or use. For example:  you keep your laptop plugged in, and your battery attached  and only unplug the power adaptor when you decide to take your laptop with you, outside of the home.  You notice that within 8 months, your laptop battery gives you the:  recharge now warning, but in half of the time that it took 8 months ago. Instead of your battery dying in an hour and a half, it dies in just 45 minutes .  Three months later your battery lasts a mere 30 minutes before the battery is dead and so on.

You must allow your battery to cycle; in other words when you are using the battery in your laptop, keep the adapter unplugged UNTIL the battery power is nearly drained (your computer should have an icon or software that monitors and notifies you when your battery is low).  I would recommend that you keep an eye on your battery while using your computer, save all of your important data when the battery gets very low, and allow the battery to die completely; and the PC to power itself off.  Then, charge the battery.

(this method is not convenient at all, but the closer that you can get to practicing this, the longer your battery will last ! )

————-

3.)  When charging your battery,  stop the charging process when the battery reaches 100% !!

I know its extremely boring monitoring your laptops battery status when it is charging and no one loves doing this;  BUT, if you would like your  battery to work in peak condition, you will put this method into practice.  For example:  I used to plug in my laptops battery and allow it to charge for hours.  I started to notice within several months, that after using my computer for 30 minutes the battery extremely low  shutting down now warning would pop up; when months ago, I could use my computer for an hour and a half at least, until the battery extremely low warning popped up!  I decided to let the computer shut itself off every time; and one day, I decided to plug the adapter in,  turn the PC back on, and when it booted successfully  I removed the adapter.

I continued this procedure for a day or two, then I finally noticed that the more I continue this cycling of the battery, the longer my battery lasted  until it eventually supplied me with the full  1  hour of power.  (I hope I didnt confuse you on that, if so, please  feel free to email me).

I had inadvertently cycled my battery, or manipulated the memory cells by forcing the cells to re-learn their maximum charge level.  To avoid needing to cycle YOUR battery, it is highly recommended that you monitor your batterys charging, and stop charging it once it reaches 100%.  Just as important as unplugging it at 100%, is draining your battery completely prior to charging it.

I hope that you find this information helpful, and hopefully this article will help to save you from spending unnecessary money replacing your laptop battery.  A penny saved is indeed, a penny earned.

Happy Computing!

Laptop Battery,Toshiba Laptop Battery,Acer Laptop Battery, HP Laptop Battery, Laptop Memory | Battery F.A.Q

Laptop Battery,Toshiba Laptop Battery, Acer Laptop Battery, Compaq Laptop Battery, HP Laptop Battery, Laptop Memory –> F.A.Q

www.aussie-battery.com have the largest range of Laptop Batteries and AC Adapters in Australia. We carry Battery Chargers and AC Adapters for over 20,000 different laptops. All our laptop batteries, laptop adapters, battery chargers are shipped from Alexandria NSW 2015 Sydney.

1. The New Battery Isn’t Charging. Is it defective battery ?

New batteries are shipped in a discharged condition or with very low capacity and must charged before use. We generally recommend an overnight charge (approximately twelve hours). Refer to the user’s manual for charging instructions. Rechargeable batteries should be cycled (fully charged and then fully discharged) three to five times initially to allow them to reach their full capacity. (Note: it is normal for a battery to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging).

Note:
New batteries are hard for the device to charge; they have never been fully charged and are therefore “unformed”. Sometimes the device’s charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, remove the battery from the device and then reinsert it. The charge cycle should begin again. This may happen several times during the first battery charge. Don’t worry; it’s perfectly normal.

2. How to discharge and charge laptop battery ?

A typical charge and discharge cycle is as follow:
1. Install your newly purchased battery into your laptop
2. Disconnect the AC adapter and use your laptop until it itself shuts down. In this situation, the battery is fully discharged.
3. Connect the AC adapter and your battery should start charging.
4. Charge until the battery is full.
Repeat this charge and discharge cycle a few times and your battery pack will be conditioned to perform at full capacity.

Note: Please do not overdischarge and overcharge your battery.

3. How to discharge and charge camera battery ?

(1).Place the battery in your camera until it itself turns off. In this situation ,the battery is fully discharged.
(2).Take out your battery and slide it into your battery charger.
(3). Connect your charger with power to fully charge the battery. It is normal for a new battery that battery indicator shows 100% capacity in 10 to 15 minutes. Please keep charging until there are no time left for charging.
(4). Fully charged and fully discharged or “cycled” as much as five times to condition them into performing at full capacity.
Note: Our battery can not be charged with your camera directly. Please charge the battery with our battery charger .

4. If your battery can not charge with our battery charger, what is matter with the charger?

I think there is some electrical contact problem in your charger and you can fix it yourself in a few minutes.

(1). Remove your charger from the DC adapter.
(2). There are two hooks at the bottom of the charger.
(3). Your can release the top charging plate by pushing the hooks with two fingers.
(4). The top charging plate will release from the top.
(5). At the bottom of the charging plate, there will be three metallic contacts.
(6). Try pulling all the contacts so that it will avoid the bad connection.
(7). Slowly re-insert the charging plate to the charging base.
(8). Re-connect the DC adapter and your charger should work.

Good luck and if there is still other problem, please don’t hesitate to send us a mail again.

5. What does the light indicator mean when charging battery ?

(1).Plug the AC power adapter in a wall outlet.
(2). Connect the AC Power adaptor supplied with charger to the DC in jack.
(3). “Status” indicator shows RED when the charger is ready and “Charger” indicator shows flashing Green when waiting for battery pack.
(4). Slide battery pack in the charger and “Charger” indicator goes RED when charging.
(5). “Charger” indicator show RED and GREEN alternatively when battery pack has more than 90% charged.
(6).When the battery pack is fully charged, the “Charger” indicator shows a steady green.
(7). After the battery pack fully charged, slide the battery pack out.
(8). Unplug DC power, “CHARGE” and “STATUS” indicators go out.

6. How to reply to customers if we sent them defective merchandise with price below US.00 ?

We are very sorry for the quality problem of the merchandise.
Please keep the defective merchandise and you do not need to send it back to us.We will send good merchandise to you at once.
If you require further help, please feel free to contact us.

7.How to reply to customer if we sent incorrect charger to them?

We are very sorry for the mistake by our shipping department.
Please keep the charger you received and do not return back to us.
We will send the correct adapter plate (the top plastic part) to you at once. You can install the adapter plate into the charger base yourself.
If you require further help, please feel free to contact us.

8.The laptop battery still reports 7 minutes of life when it is 100% charged, but the battery actually lasted about 2.5 hours. Are the internal electronics of this battery (the part that reports status ) are okey ?

New laptop battery has a self recognise process for the first time charge . After using a period of time, it will become normal.
Please set the minimum capacity for the computer to turn off in the power meter management. Disconnect the AC adapter and use your laptop until the battery is fully discharged. Then connect your ac adapter to fully charge the battery. Fully discharge and fully charge the battery or cycled about 3 to 4 times to condition the battery to its full capacity.

9. What are smart batteries?

Smart batteries have internal circuitry which monitors the battery condition which is displayed on a fuel gauge to indicate the remaining charge .

10. If your camera keeps asking for a info lithium battery and then turns off, what should you do ?

Thanks for your interest in our product .
Our fulfill centre will issue RMA number to you. Please paste the RMA number on the outside of the package and send back the battery to us as our instruction. We will replace another battery after receiving the return battery or refund battery price to you ( not including shipping)
Should you need any other help, please feel free to contact us.

11. What is memory effect?

A condition that occurs when a battery is charged to the same level several times consecutively. The battery develops a chemical “memory” of that level and will not allow a charging past that point. You can avoid this through several complete discharge and recharge cycles.

12. We often meet this question “I have discharged the battery to zero volts, and fully discharge and fully charge as your instruction, but the battery can not charge to 100% capacity.” It is involved with overdischarge and overcharge .

Our battery pack is made up of several cells. If you discharge the battery to zero, what will most likely happen is that one or more of the cells will “reverse” because they are weaker than the other cells. The reversed cell begins to accept a “backwards” charge from the other better charged cells around it. This will kill the battery. So we should stop the discharge at one point, rather than letting the pack slump down to zero volts.

In the meantime, when the battery is at its full capacity, we should not plug the AC adapter to trickle charge the battery. It will overcharge the battery.
Note: Overdischarge and overcharge the battery will damage the battery.
